Republican Thom Tillis Joins Growing Anti-War Movement in Congress
Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, the Senate narrowly failed to adopt a bipartisan war powers resolution (H.Con.Res.89) to halt military action in Iran. The House previously adopted the resolution. A similar war powers resolution (H.Con.Res.86) was also recently adopted by both the House and Senate. Today, National Iran American Council Action filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration arguing that continuing this war without congressional authorization violates the U.S. Constitution. Demand Progress has also released a memo debunking the incorrect media narrative that these resolutions are merely symbolic and lack the force of law.

“Today’s vote shows that the tide continues to turn against this illegal war. Yet another Republican has broken with Trump and voted to end his war with Iran. Trump’s support within his own party is starting to crack. Congress has already passed a legally binding war powers resolution directing him to remove U.S. forces from the fighting. He ignored it and kept waging a war that was illegal from day one.
Now Trump is threatening to ‘annihilate’ Iran while Americans pay for his war at the gas pump and grocery store. Members should take his administration to court, press for negotiations and a return to a memorandum of understanding and stop handing him the money to keep fighting. Every member who voted to end this war should be ready to block the NDAA or any other bill that fails to cut it off.”
