Demand Progress Poll Shows Majority of Voters Oppose Unauthorized Military Strikes

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, Israel began offensive military strikes against Iran, which risks dragging the U.S. into participating in the hostilities. In April, Demand Progress commissioned a national poll of 1,000 registered voters showing that 53 percent believe President Trump should obtain congressional authorization before striking targets in other countries. Among just Republicans, a whopping 56 percent said they believed President Trump should seek congressional authorization.

The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:

“Israel’s preemptive strikes on Iran threaten to drag the U.S. into a catastrophic regional war that Congress and the American people have had no say in. This reckless escalation runs counter to U.S. national interests and severely undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran. Any unauthorized U.S. military involvement in these ongoing offensive operations would defy the will of the American people, who have made it clear that they believe President Trump must obtain authorization from Congress before engaging in hostilities. We call on Congress to reassert its constitutional authority over matters of war and pass a War Powers Resolution to ensure the U.S. does not participate in this reckless conflict. Americans must not be further put in harm’s way because of Netanyahu’s disastrous decisions.”
